All body organs are different from each other in terms of their working. Skin
is the largest organ of our body. There is about 8 pounds and 22 square feet on
the skin in adults. We can make ourselves presentable with this fleshy
covering. It can be used insulating and waterproof shield which can provide
protection to the body from extreme temperature, sunlight damage and other
harmful chemicals. It can prevent body from infection and can be helpful in
converting calcium in healthy bones. There are sensor packed nerves on the skin
with which it remain in contact with brain. It is an amazing and versatile
organ of the body allowing free movement.
There are three skin layers. Epidermis is the outer most layer which
consists of keratinocytes cells which are made from keratin. Several layers are
formed by the keratinocytes which can grow outwards. About five weeks are
required by the cells to work with skin surface. This covering is known as
stratum corneum. Defensive Langerjans cells are harbored by the epidermis which
can alert the immune system of the body. There is dermis below the skin layer
which gives elasticity to the skin with collagen and elastin fibers. The body
temperature is regulated with the help of blood vessels to escape the heat. The
feelings like pain, temperature and touch are picked by the network of
receptors and fibers.
There are hair follicles and glands in the dermis. The internal temperature
is brought down by the sweat glands through prescription. Scented sweat is
produced by apocrine glands which are developed during puberty. Oil like sebum
is secreted by sebaceous glands for lubricating skin and hair. Subcutis is the
base layer of skin in which seam of fat is included as fuel. It can be used for
insulation and cushion from knocks and falls. Melanin provides skin color which
is pigment in the epidermis and provides protection from UV rays. Deeper
colored melanin particles are produced in dark skinned people. The people from
tropical regions can have darkest complexions. The people from northern
latitude normally have fair skin. There can be many benefits of the dark skin.
